To the photographer, just wondering how you are triggering the camera between still and video mode on the D300s?Is this done using a custom rig? Or something available to everyone? Also, how are you starting/stopping the videos remotely? Just a bit curiousity from a current D300s owner
who will be the first paraglider, surfing the Morning glory! Great stuff guys!
Photographers Final CommentCreative imagery is also about unique concepts and idea’s and seeing those idea’s realized. It is about the process involved, the relationships with your subject and the undertaking involved in capturing the images. The device used to capture such imagery is all part of this process. Creating a concept, designing a system, getting to right place at the right time and achieving results is what makes the results so worthwhile.Pressing the button is the easy bit!
awesome work man and that looks like a great lens.,,,,, re 3.07 correct framing – the stays for the glider are not lined up the same on either side of the frame. Was this how you wanted to frame the shot or was it a mistake due to view finder being hard to look through?. Is there a HD monitor made by nikon that will work with those cams?.. epic video, awesome clouds.
Just a quicky re: the framing.. this was actually caused by the glider struts placing pressure on the camera mount forcing it to twist slightly… unfortunately this can happen during loops and flat-spins when the stresses on the glider are greater. We overcame this with minor camera-mount manipulation however to achieve the desired results the contact of struts and camara body is unavoidable.
i thought it must have been a bugger to mount that cam on the glider,, the stresses it must go through, what sort of g’s does he pull whilst doing those moves? And again that is amazing bit of work man,, is there a monitor option/ HD video out etc on that model cam.
Photographers Comments – Part 4Facts: This dedicated Nikon D300s system is able to do all listed in Comment 3 – utilizing a high quality 12.3MP CMOS sensor for superb image and video reproduction in a remote compact device… something I believe not many imaging equipment manufacturers can claim… and we have the results to prove it. Currently this is the one of the best options available… Yes you can get better stills, Yes you can get better HD-video… but from the same compact device???
Photographer Comment – Part 3In this case, the focus was on the ‘tool’ for good reason… I believe Joe McNally may agree with me on this. The options available to photograph high resolution still images able to reproduce a minimum – double page spread in a high-end magazine as well as capture quality motion-picture footage are extremely limited. To shoot at super-wide angle and do all this with a ‘simplistic’ dedicated trigger in a compact lightweight usable unit further reduces options.
Photographers Comment – Part 2I will not waffle on for long however my response is mainly to nickrtvt2. Nick… i actually agree with you regarding your opinion suggesting the camera is only a tool… however calling me a fool suggests a lack of forethought on your behalf… I am an experienced professional photographer and have photographed adventure sports for over 10 years… I expect you can say the same of yourself to have such strong views?
Photographers Response Part 1.I figure it is about time I post my own comment on this project… as I happen to be the bloke in the video and the photographer behind the concept of capturing both the video and stills from a single camera on the nose of Jonny Durands hang-glider.For all those who have an opinion, whether positive or negative… fantastic! I am glad this project has grabbed your attention – that was the idea behind the imagery and the creation of this web-clip.
